Low-stimulus day for families

Evolutie in Naturalis

A visit to a museum can be quite overwhelming. Noises, moving images, crowds, or bright lights can make a visit uncomfortable for some people.

That's why Naturalis is organizing a low-stimulus day for families. During this special opening, we'll take various measures to make the museum as calm and predictable as possible. This way, visitors who need fewer stimuli can explore the museum in a relaxed manner.

Are you 16 or older? On the same day, we're also hosting a low-stimulus evening.

What can you expect?

During the low-stimulus day, we'll provide the following, among other things:

  • fewer visitors in the museum;
  • a calm atmosphere;
  • dimmed lighting in the Atrium (reception area) and workshops;
  • lowered volume for sound and audiovisual presentations where possible;
  • a quiet room to unwind;
  • staff who are aware of the low-stimulus opening;
  • no school groups.

Good
to know

We do our best to make the museum as low-stimulus as possible. At the same time, Naturalis remains a museum with permanent exhibitions and other visitors. As a result, not all stimuli can be eliminated.

For example you may still:

  • encounter other visitors;
  • hear noises from visitors or elevators;
  • see videos and interactive exhibits.

By being clear about this in advance, we hope you'll be able to assess whether this visit is right for you.

Who
is this opening for?

The low-stimulus day is intended for families who need a calm and predictable museum experience. For example, families in which one or more members are sensitive to stimuli, such as those with autism, ADHD, acquired brain injury (ABI), or high sensitivity (HSP).

This is an inclusive event. That means other visitors are also welcome, as long as they respect the quiet atmosphere.
