Understanding the processes that generate and maintain species distribution patterns is a fundamental question in modern ecology. The distribution of reef-building corals over depth provides an ideal system to test hypotheses proposed to explain general patterns of biodiversity, as this diverse biological community occurs along a geographically short depth gradient, encompassing rapid and predictable changes in key abiotic factors (such as light). My research provides new insights into how coral species occupy depth, and reveals chronic issues relating to both the validity of previous studies, and continued progress in this field.
