Naturalis advised the Port of Rotterdam Authority on developing its new Nature Strategy. The strategy helps the Port Authority to create more space for biodiversity within the port and its surrounding area, improve the basic conditions for nature and integrate nature and biodiversity into the organisation.

Biodiversity & Society

Biodiversity
under pressure

Biodiversity is under increasing pressure worldwide. To reverse this trend and mitigate its negative impact on our society, action is needed. Organisations can contribute to this by making choices that consider biodiversity. To this end, Naturalis has developed a biodiversity governance model.

In collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam Authority, we have adapted the model to reflect the specific dynamics of the Port of Rotterdam and the Rhine-Meuse Delta. This model helps organisations integrate biodiversity considerations into their decision-making processes and actions. The model has resulted in a comprehensive nature vision, which the Port Authority will support and implement over the next 25 years (2025–2050).

Developing the Nature Vision 2025–2050

Between 2024 and 2025, the Port of Rotterdam Authority (HbR) collaborated with our team to develop its nature vision for the next 25 years using the governance model. This methodology document outlines the process of developing this vision and the strategic choices that informed it.

Biodiversity
in the capillaries

The fact that a large organisation such as the Port Authority is now taking the initiative by implementing biodiversity-conscious measures demonstrates that there is a growing willingness within the business community to contribute to a nature-inclusive society. This initiative can serve as an example for other organisations, helping them to understand how they impact nature and where opportunities lie to turn this into a positive influence. To this end, Naturalis previously developed a management model. Based on this model and an analysis of the surrounding natural environment, a widely supported vision emerged that integrates biodiversity into every aspect of the Port Authority’s operations.
