For the Biodiversiteit op je bord (Biodiversity on Your Plate) Challenge, Naturalis's Kennis Natuurlijk! (Knowledge Naturally!) program has designed info cards highlighting food produced with attention for biodiversity. Restaurants can use these info cards to show diners the choices they make and the positive impact those choices have on biodiversity.
Info cards
Global biodiversity is under severe pressure due to conventional food production. Overfishing, deforestation, and monocultures are causing biodiversity loss at an alarming rate. However, chefs, caterers, and their guests can make a difference by choosing biodiversity friendly dishes.
As part of Naturalis's Kennis Natuurlijk! program, ecologist Melissa Ramdayal researched the 25 most commonly purchased food products in the hospitality industry—such as coffee, wine, potatoes, and eggs—and evaluated the impact of their production on biodiversity.
Based on this research, the Kennis Natuurlijk! team developed info cards for hospitality professionals. According to Ramdayal, these cards help business owners showcase the sustainable choices they make when sourcing their ingredients. "The info cards enable participating restaurants to show their guests: this is the food we choose to serve, and this is why that choice matters."

AboutKennis Natuurlijk!
This is a Kennis Natuurlijk! (Knowledge Naturally!) project. Kennis Natuurlijk! is a collaboration between ASN Bank and Naturalis Biodiversity Center that connects young researchers to societal knowledge questions. The project focuses on making our living, working, and social environments healthy, nature-inclusive, and climate-resilient. The research required for this is financially supported by ASN Bank using a portion of the commission income from ASN insurance products. Through this collaboration, we can jointly answer knowledge questions that would otherwise remain unanswered.
