I have always been fascinated by the astonishing diversity of plants. Since I was a kid, I have wondered: How many species are there? Where did they come from, and how did such an incredible diversity evolve through time? I explore these questions using integrative taxonomy, genomics, and artificial intelligence data.

Researchinterest
My research interests focus on plant taxonomy, evolution, and historical biogeography. I am interested in how plant diversity and morphological traits have evolved, how species are related to one another, and how plants are distributed across different geographic regions.
The Netherlands is losing biodiversity faster than many other European countries. But how can we effectively protect species if we do not know what is out there? At Naturalis, I study the diversity of the Dutch flora, with a focus on understanding which species occur in the Netherlands and using genomic data and artificial intelligence to develop faster and more accurate ways to identify them.
A second goal of my research is to improve our understanding of the taxonomy of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). With more than 30,000 species, it is the most diverse group of flowering plants and can be particularly challenging to identify at the species level.
