The legend
of Namazu

Earthquakes also feature in ancient Japanese tales. According to the legend of Namazu, a giant catfish lives deep underground; when it moves its body and tail, the earth begins to shake. Normally, the god Kashima keeps the creature pinned down with a heavy stone, but whenever he is momentarily distracted, Namazu seizes the opportunity. Traces of this legend can still be found today: on traffic signs designating routes for emergency vehicles, in the logo of an earthquake alert app, and even in the Pokémon Whiscash. After the documentary, you will be introduced to Namazu in a miniature show and experience what happens when the creature stirs into motion.
