From 2022 to 2030, the Netherlands will be working towards achieving key biodiversity restoration targets. To monitor progress and provide insight into the state of our natural environment, the National Dashboard Biodiversity was launched on 22 May 2024. This online platform offers a clear overview of the current status of biodiversity, the factors influencing it, and the steps required to achieve the set targets. The dashboard is therefore a vital resource for policymakers and the general public alike. Together, we are working towards a greener future for the Netherlands.
Project summary
The National Dashboard Biodiversity project was initiated in response to the urgent need to halt and reverse biodiversity loss in the Netherlands, as set out in the EU's and UN's international targets. The Netherlands failed to meet the 2020 biodiversity targets, and it has a high number of endangered animal and plant species. The National Dashboard Biodiversity aims to provide a clear overview of the current state of biodiversity in the Netherlands, the impact of various pressure factors and the progress being made towards the 2030 recovery targets. It is clear from the dashboard that the Netherlands is not currently on track to achieve the 2030 biodiversity targets. While there have been positive developments in some areas, overall ecological quality remains insufficient, necessitating accelerated action.
What are the benefitsof the project?
The National Dashboard Biodiversity is a valuable tool for accelerating biodiversity recovery in the Netherlands. This online platform serves as a central source of information, offering insights into the state of nature in the Netherlands and our progress towards achieving the 2030 biodiversity targets. By clearly presenting the current status of the fourteen specific targets, the dashboard allows users to closely monitor progress.
The Dashboard offers more than just a status update: it provides guidance on where and how we need to make adjustments to achieve our restoration targets. The nature organisations involved encourage professionals and interested parties to actively use this web tool to inform more targeted actions and collaboration aimed at restoring Dutch biodiversity.
