Deep sea barcoding of the Dutch Caribean

Scavenger of the Caribbean

My goal is to map the biodiversity in the Dutch Caribbean region through genetic biomonitoring. With DNA based techniques we look at species diversity, the distribution and composition of communities and we determine which factors are important for shaping these communities. Water and sediment contain small scraps of DNA (called environmental DNA, or eDNA). By multiplying (amplifying) and sequencing these small amounts of eDNA, we can look at the genetic composition of a water sample and it is possible to determine which species occur in the area.
