Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden is the Dutch national institute for biodiversity and systematics. With our collection of 43 million specimens, one of the world's largest natural history collections, and our state-of-the-art research facilities we provide the national and international research infrastructure for species identification and monitoring. The position
In this role, your technical skills will help to unravel the complexity and reveal the beauty of natural biodiversity. Moreover, your expertise will help to combat the immense challenge of biodiversity decline. ARISE is a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary ambitious program driven by a diverse team of enthusiastic engineers, ecologists, technicians and data scientists. The programme develops a state-of-the-art research infrastructure for monitoring biodiversity and identifying species. This infrastructure will enable the identification of all species in the Netherlands through digital media, sensors and DNA samples. It generates more reliable information on biodiversity patterns and trends and helps to reverse biodiversity loss.

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player with passion for biodiversity, combined with the technical skills to enable the automated discovery of our natural world!
You will operate as the Technical Lead for the ARISE Biocloud team that consists of a data architect, three programmers and a product owner. The team is responsible for developing the underlying core data infrastructure of ARISE, including a data lake house solution for data management (Databricks), application programming interfaces (APIs) and integration services for both batch and streaming to connect ARISE to other infrastructures. As a technical lead you guide the team through all the stages of the engineering process from the system design of the data lakehouse to the implementation and improvement of developed services. The team uses advanced DevOps techniques in the delivery process.

We are looking for a Technical Lead with experience in these fields:
- Building large data architectures;
- Big Data solutions such as Data Lakehouse;
- Python, SQL (Apache Spark a nice extra);
- Data processing in batch and streaming;
- Usage and management of cloud platform solutions, e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud;
- Implementing open source solutions;
- High level quality development and guiding colleagues in using standards, development tools and technology.
In addition to your technical skills, we seek someone who:
- Is interested in the field of natural sciences and biodiversity;
- Is a team player with a great sense of responsibility and a high degree of independence;
- Is comfortable working in a distributed work, diverse and inclusive environment;
- Enjoys working in an agile setting with a multidisciplinary team;
- Has a service-oriented attitude with good communication skills;
- Has at least a BSc in applied sciences or university thinking level (for Dutch applicants, that means at least HBO/WO). Preferably in data engineering or a similar technical study.
Ouroffer
- A contract (36 hours per week, 32 hours per week is possible) for a period of one year, to be extended with one year after a successful first year evaluation.
- A monthly gross salary between €3801 and €5075 (at this moment the scale is under re-evaluation).
- You also get an allowance for travel expenses, holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (3.4%).
