Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden is the Dutch national institute for biodiversity and systematics. With our collection of 42 million specimens, one of the world's largest natural history collections, and our state-of-the-art research facilities we offer the (inter)national research infrastructure for species identification and monitoring. At Naturalis, we are passionate about providing access to biodiversity information. We do this by building infrastructures for biodiversity data and services for researchers and the wider community. By using innovative technologies in computer vision and bioinformatics to automate species recognition, we can provide more reliable information about biodiversity patterns and trends and help combat biodiversity loss.
ARISE (https://www.arise-biodiversity.nl) is developing a state-of-the-art infrastructure for biodiversity monitoring and species identification. With this infrastructure we will be able to identify all species in the Netherlands from digital media, sensors, and DNA samples. ARISE is a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary ambitious program driven by a diverse team of enthusiastic engineers, ecologists, technicians and data scientists.
As a Lead Software Engineer, you are part of the Naturalis Application Development team and working primarily in the ARISE Biocloud team. This team is responsible for developing the underlying infrastructure of ARISE, including a data lakehouse solution for data management, application programming interfaces (APIs), integration services to connect ARISE to other infrastructures, and digital platform for access to data and services. All our developments are focused on end-to-end workflows delivering direct value for end users.
You will function as the technical lead and main software architect. You will be involved in all the stages of the software development process from the architectural design to the implementation and improvement of developed services. You are an enthusiastic team player with coordination skills, who likes to work agile and is used to working in a multi-organisational, multi-stakeholder environment.

Requirements qualifications, experience and skills
We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer with experience in
- building large data architectures;
- software solution design, making long term choices in issues related to technology and solutions, and communicating with multiple stakeholders on these subjects;
- developing scalable APIs / microservices;
- DevOps platform usage preferably Gitlab, automated tests and containerization;
- open source software development;
- high level quality software development and guiding colleagues in using standards, development tools and technology.
You have at least a BSc in applied sciences or university thinking level (for Dutch applicants, that means minimally HBO/WO), preferably in software engineering or a related field.
A contract (36 hours per week, 32 is possible) for a period of one year, to be extended with one year after a successful first year evaluation, and a monthly gross salary between € 3,525.-- and € 4,738--. You also get an allowance for travel expenses, holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (3.4%).

ARISE is a unique joint project by Naturalis, the University of Amsterdam, Westerdijk Institute, and the University of Twente. This lead software engineer position in the Biocloud team will primarily involve collaboration with teams at Naturalis and the University of Twente.
