Crossing marine lines at Ternate
The volcanic island of Ternate is located in the northern Moluccas. Little is known about the marine life of this area. During this expedition the marine diversity of Ternate will be the focus of exploration. The research team is particularly interested in certain species groups. Their presence or absence can tell us more about the geograpical boundaries of marine species in this area.
The expedition, lead by Dr Bert W. Hoeksema, will be on Ternate between 22 October and 17 November. Stay updated through this weblog!

The sponges of Ternate: 1896 vs. 2009 - Nicole de Voogd - 6 november 2009
A little bit over a century ago the German professor Kükenthal sailed the Moluccas seas and collected about 100 sponges somewhere around the island of Ternate. Once back in Germany he passed this collection on to a PhD-student (O. Kieschnick) of a well-known sponge taxonomist (J. Thiele). In 1896,Kieschnick described a total of 50 sponges of which22 new to science, however his tutor wasn’t satisfi...

Highlight of the day - Arjan Gittenberger - 1 november 2009
In addition to the shrimps described by Charles Fransen, we have found a variety of other strange parasites and/or symbionts that live inside ascidians and salps. Fig. A, the white dots visible inside this transparent sea-squirt, are the polyps of hydroids (Hydrozoa) that feed themselves with the plankton that is filtered out of the water by their ascidian host; Fig. B, when opening up this from t...

Hide and Seek - Charles Fransen - 1 november 2009

There is a group of shrimp that is extremely good in this tactic. Most of these shrimp live in association with other animals an...

Getting a research permit is a must when foreigners wish to visit Indonesia in order to investigate the biodiversity of its coral reefs. A good working relation with an Indonesian university or scientific institute is the first requirement because research collaboration is an important condition for the permit. The Indonesian counterpart institute acts as sponsor in the application procedu...
